Celtics win game 1, lose series

Detroit Pistons vs. Boston Celtics

79 – 88

I know what you are thinking…the Celtics lead the whole time, executed well and beat the Pistons by 9 points. Well, a win is a win, can’t argue about that, but the future isn’t pretty for Boston. Some things will change and we all know that…

  • Detroit had 13 turnovers compared to Boston’s 11 – several turnovers because of the Celtic’s great D, but a couple of times they just threw the ball out of bounds
  • The Pistons struggled on offense and defense. The only starter that brought his A-game was Antonio McDyess – his jumpshot is money from the elbow
  • Is it just me or was every third shot an in-and-out?

Garnett & Pierce killed the Pistons:

  • Kevin Garnett was great, gotta give him credit. 26 points, 9 rebounds, great defense and smooth jumpshot – Player of the Game
  • Paul Pierce hit every turnaround, fade-away, “I don’t give a F if two defenders are right in my face” shot – he was on fire and scored 22 points – he is scary good

How about Detroit’s starting 5?

  • Richard Hamilton, the Piston’s leading scorer, knocked down 5/13 shots and missed some easy looks
  • Tayshaun Prince was pretty good, but not nearly at his best – expect to see him score more in the post, because their is no way that Pierce can stop him from going to his lefty hook-shot in the zone
  • Chauncey Billups wasn’t smooth at all and he struggled – I don’t know if he was scared to drive to the basket or if he just couldn’t, because he isn’t at 100%, but when he becomes Mr. Big Shot again, he will make Rondo and Ray Allen suffer
  • They left Rasheed Wallace in Detroit, I think he missed the plane or something

Best statline you (probably) didn’t see:

  • Rajon Rondo: 11 points (including two clutch jumpers to end the 4th – one from downtown), 7 assists and 5 steals – great defense

So, why will the Pistons win this series? They played their worst basketball of the postseason and still nearly took over the game in the 4th quarter. If it wasn’t for two Rondo jumpshots (we all know that he will miss them the next time around and what does it tell you that Boston goes to Rondo for late game jumpers?), this game could have gone to overtime.

I don’t know about you, but I’m convinced that Detroit will win this series. If they can hang around while playing this bad, what will happen when they play decent? Not good or great, just decent. They will run them over…but you know what they say:

if you wanna be the man, you’ve gotta beat the man

  1. All I see in this article is a lot of ‘what ifs.” Well, maybe you could look at it this way: if Ray Allen had knocked down the shots that he usually makes, it would’ve been a twenty point game. When LeBron had all those bad games against Boston, everybody was saying it was just him playing badly. Same thing here with Detroit. Give some more credit to the Celtics defense for making the Pistons look bad.

  2. It will come down to the final 3 minutes of Game 7, one way or the other.

These two teams are extremely well-matched.

  3. True, this is some woulda-coulda-shoulda talk right here and Bostons D was big, but the Pistons beat themselves…again. I’ll give the Celtics credit if they can do it again.

The Pistons looked bad in a game or two against Philly as well…nobody said it was the 76ers defense back then.
